Parenteral iron preparations available in the past
\nwere associated with a risk of anaphylaxis and
\ndeath, which made physicians reluctant to use
\nthem. The formulation most frequently responsible
\nfor these serious adverse events is high-molecularweight
\niron dextran (HMW ID). The availability, first in
\nEurope and more recently in the USA, of three other
\npreparations (low-molecular-weight [LMW] ID, iron
\nsucrose, and ferric gluconate), with a much better safety
\nprofile, is changing the pattern of use, thus prompting this
