IN this issue, Robinson et al. (1) present experimental
\nevidence for ineffective erythropoiesis in
\na mouse model of haemorrhagic shock. What is the
\nrationale behind the observation of loss of erythropoietic
\nprogenitors and enhanced apoptotic activity
\nin the bone marrow cells after haemorrhagic shock?
\nThe authors indicate several possibilities, including
\nan immediate surge of tumour necrosis factor
\n(TNF)-a in circulation. Bleeding and replenishment
\nof the blood volume is believed to be a classical
\nphysiological mechanism where lack of perfusion
\nvolume causes hypoxia, followed by erythropoietin
\nsecretion from the kidneys and blocked cell death
\nin erythroid progenitors resulting, in an increased
\nnumber of erythrocytes released into the circulation.
\nRobinson et al. may provide the first glimpse
\nof a more complex array of physiological responses
\nto haemorrhagic shock involving inflammation,
