Patient<br \/>\nblood management focuses on multidisciplinary and<br \/>\nmultimodal preventive measures to reduce or obviate<br \/>\nthe need for transfusions and ultimately to improve<br \/>\nthe clinical outcomes of patients. Patient blood management<br \/>\nstrategies can be applied at every stage of<br \/>\ncare to surgical and nonsurgical patients, and they<br \/>\nAddress Correspondence to:<br \/>\nAryeh Shander<br \/>\nDepartment of Anesthesiology<br \/>\nEnglewood Hospital and Medical Center<br \/>\n350 Engle Street, Englewood, NJ 07631<br \/>\nEmail: aryeh.shander@ehmc.com<br \/>\ngenerally fall under one of these three categories<br \/>\n(the so-called pillars of blood management): optimizing<br \/>\nhematopoiesis and appropriate management<br \/>\nof anemia, minimizing bleeding and blood loss, and<br \/>\nharnessing and optimizing physiological tolerance of<br \/>\nanemia through employing all available modalities<br \/>\nwhile treatment is initiated. Several tools and modalities<br \/>\nare available to address each of these pillars.<br \/>\nExamples include hematinic agents, systemic and topical<br \/>\nhemostatic agents, autotransfusion, and bloodsparing<br \/>\nperfusion and surgical techniques. Additionally,<br \/>\nchanges in practice of clinicians (eg, adherence<br \/>\nto restrictive, evidence-based transfusion strategies<br \/>\nwith emphasis on physiologic indications for transfusion,<br \/>\nminimization of iatrogenic blood loss, and<br \/>\nadequate planning) play an important role in patient<br \/>\nblood management.
