despite the limitations of any observational
\nstudy, and the need to be confirmed in a prospective trial,
\ndetermination of functional status, other than transferrin
\nsaturation, seems to be of greater help to the clinician for
\nindicating iron in this population, and provide a more reliable
\nprediction of efficacy than other iron deficiency-related
\nmeasures. Although we believe that it is necessary to
\ndetermine ferritin concentration levels, because it provides
\ninformation on the patient\u2019s iron stores and excludes
\nthose with high levels before i.v. iron is administered, we
\nsuggest incorporating functional parameters in the preoperative
\nworkup as an aid to deciding the appropriateness
